Fiber Kit Buying List

Everything Timber SAV needs to install, terminate and repair armored fiber.

25 Aug 2026

Timber SAV installs armored outdoor fiber and needs to be able to repair it: replace a failed connector end, and splice a mid-span cut when someone digs through a buried run. This is the complete kit, bought from scratch.

The cable this kit is sized around is ERSTICKT OD 5.0mm armored uniboot, OM3/OM4 multimode duplex. Tool sizing depends on that 5.0mm outer diameter, and most armored slitters on the market are the wrong size for it.

Uniboot connectors have a deliberate polarity-reversal mechanism. The boot slides or rotates to release the two connector bodies so A and B can be swapped, then relocks. A released mechanism looks exactly like a broken connector: two ferrules that slide relative to each other under light tension. Before assuming a connector is dead, work the collar back to the latched position. That is a free fix and it should be the first thing checked every time.

Core Splicing Rig

Signal Fire AI-6A+ Fusion Splicer, six motor core alignment, with OPM and VFL Melts two glass ends into one strand. Its built in optical power meter and visual fault locator mean it also serves as your test gear. $549.99 View on Amazon →
Signal Fire AI-9, step up Upgrade path Same idea, faster, more headroom $899.99 View on Amazon →
Jonard FC-500 Precision Cleaver, 250um and 900um, 16 blade positions Buy only if needed Cuts bare glass perfectly flat. A flat cleave is what makes a good splice. $249.95 View on Amazon →
The AI-6A+ ships with a cleaver, and the cleaver is the part buyers of that machine consistently call the weak link. The FC-500 nearly doubles the entry cost, so the honest sequence is to buy the splicer, make ten practice splices on scrap with the bundled cleaver, and check whether the loss numbers are consistent. Upgrade only if they are not. Do not buy the FC-500 preemptively.

Critical sizing warning. Almost every armored cable slitter sold is rated 8-28.6mm, including the widely recommended ACS-1 at $39.90 and the Jonard AST-200 at $142.16. This cable is 5.0mm. Those tools do not fit it. Buy a 4-10mm unit or the tool will be useless on arrival.

Connector Repair

With a fusion splicer, a failed connector end is repaired either by splicing on a factory pigtail, or with a splice-on connector that puts a fresh LC directly on the cut end with integrated strain relief.

Blocker. Splice-on connectors require a splicer-specific SOC holder, and no Signal Fire AI-6A+ holder appears on Amazon. Contact Signal Fire directly or check AliExpress before committing to the splice-on path. If no holder exists for that machine, the fallback is splicing factory pigtails, which needs nothing extra beyond the pigtails already on this list.

Mid-Span Repair

For when a backhoe goes through a buried run.

ItemWhat it doesPriceLink
Aerial and Direct Burial Fiber Optic Cable Enclosure with splice tray and sleeves, 60mm Houses and protects the splices. A splice left in free air fails. $99.28 View on Amazon →
The thing nobody tells you: you cannot splice without slack. A dig strike leaves two cut ends in a trench with zero spare cable. You need enough length to pull both ends up into a work area, which in practice means splicing in a replacement section with a closure at each end, so four splices instead of two.
Change the install practice now and this gets much easier later. Leave a coiled slack loop of 15 to 25 feet in a handhole or a marked spot at each end, and ideally mid-run, on every future pull. It costs a few dollars of cable and converts a two-closure repair into a one-closure repair.
